March 2009: Fantastic news!! Kennet District Council votes against closed gates and lights
On Thursday 12th March Quakers Walk Protection Group found cause to celebrate!! At the Regulatory Planning Committee meeting Kennet District Council voted for the following requirements on the developers to be removed :-
- The fixing of the gates open with barriers to entry at the southern end
- The installation of lighting
An amendment was passed however, the developers are still to bear the cost of the cabling for the lighting, to be inserted whilst drainage pipes are installed underground.
We'll all have to be on our guard against a further push for lighting in years to come of course, but, with reassurance that the surface of the walk will not be inappropriately improved either, the campaign has achieved all 3 of its objectives....victory indeed for a lengthy campaign.
There was an excellent turnout from supporters of the group in the chamber and some very well presented speeches made. A BIG THANKYOU to one and all who have supported the campaign.
