17th January 2010: the work on Quakers Walk resulting from the housing development will start on Monday 25th January. Work on digging the trench, laying the pipe and re-surfacing will take 6 weeks.
The pipe will be laid in a trench along Quakers Walk not on the side of the lower eastern field. The Merchant Venturers' representative did discuss this with them as promised but it has not been possible to change the route at this late stage.
Work will start at the southern end with the lifting of the cobbles by the Gates in order to dig the trench. This part of the project will take 2 weeks. During this time, pedestrian access will be possible to the footpath and the allotments. However, when the digger is working on the narrowest part of the Walk, pedestrians might need to wait if the digger is in action but will be allowed to pass.
Once that is completed, the rest of QW (as far as the bench) will be closed for 6 weeks but there will still be access through the gates to the allotments
