I have received many concerning letters about the future of this ancient footpath and bridleway, I and my fellow District councillors have spent many hours working to minimise the impact of imposed developments particularly Quakers Walk, and to strike a balance between protecting the environment and allowing free and safe access for all and to protect our rural way of life, our next moves are:- To agree a surface similar to the canal paths,
- Improve gateway access for the disabled,
- To obtain the best solution for lighting,
- To maintain Bridleway in its original form,
- To ensure the trees are protected during installation of drainage and environmental considerations are in line with lead group policies.

| It is disappointing to see that the District Councillors do NOT seem to have got the message that lighting in any form is not acceptable and that the gates MUST be left closed. |

| In mid July I was in Devizes with a residential school trip staying at Braeside. In torrential rain we negotiated Quakers Walk and I was stunned by its beauty. Despite the weather it was being used by walkers, joggers, dog walkers and one woman with a pushchair. The only jarring note was the encroachment of housing. What on earth is going on in the heads of the planners who want to wreck this lovely place by making it just like everywhere else? |

| I must admit that I'm surprised at how few comments there are on the website regarding QW and the potentional for the developers to ruin it for the population of Devizes. There has been strong representation of the public at the various meetings that have been held, but here, nothing. This is a public forum for you to add your comments, pledges of support and concerns. It is somewhere that "the opposition" might look to gauge reaction and response. If they see few comments or concerns expressed then they may form the opinion that no-one is really interested in what they plan. Speak up and speak out! |
| The Planning System | Ted East, Devizes Guardians |
| Many people in Devizes are concerned at the way in which the planning system works. By the time you become aware of a development proposal it is difficult or impossible to change it to make it acceptable to the community.
The planning system is the product of a centralist government that likes to talk about more local control while actually giving you less. Once an area is in the long term overall Structure Plan developers can shoe-horn in their new estates regardless of local wishes.
It is now VITAL that Devizes residents look at the new Structure Plan for the new Wiltshire County unitary council, which comes into being in April this year. You have a once in a lifetime opportunity to comment and to try to prevent more Quakers Walk style developments in the next decade or two.
Go to http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/local-development-framework to read about the plans and to comment. It is a tedious process but well worth while. |
| Quakers Walk Lighting and Gates | Steve Dixon |
| I'm hoping that somebody from Kennet District Council or anybody else who is in favour of lighting Quakers Walk and opening the gates may take a few seconds to consider that by introducing lighting, they will also be introducing an open and well lit area for drunken behaviour, illegal motorcycle activity and general anti-social activity. At the moment Quakers Walk does suffer from these blights, but only during the lighter Summer evenings. With lights in place, much of the above will almost certainly become an all year problem. |

| Such an ancient walk deserves to be left unlit. Allow the moonlight and the stars to shine on this special place. I discovered Quakers Walk only recently and fell in love with it immediately. It is bad enough having housing immediately adjoining it. Leave this quiet place alone. |
